Batman #85

Batman #85 is the epic finale of City of Bane and the end of Tom King’s run on Batman. Bane is out of the picture and it’s just Thomas and Bruce facing each other in the end. Bruce has been given time to morn and he’s now ready to show Thomas what it means to be Batman. Can Bruce beat Thomas and become the one and only Batman? Even if he does, can he be happy with Selina and still be Batman? Some answers and some spoilers are ahead so don’t read ahead if you haven’t read the issue.

Batman #85

After all the build up and anticipation for the finale of the City of Bane, I had high hopes for this issue. But I have to tell you, I was pretty disappointed. The story is all muddled with flashbacks and different explanations of lead up events. I was expecting an epic fight or big twist, there was none. Just a couple of punches, a gun pulled, and in the end, Bruce declaring that he will be Batman and marry Selina. I think everyone saw that.

At some point, Batman gave Gotham Girl a piece of platinum kryptonite. The timeline for everything in the issue just makes no sense to me. I think sometimes we’re in the past, then the future. I have no idea when the present even is. There’s a bar conversation about a football game that is being played. And we don’t find out if the QB, Cambell wins the game or not. But Batman is back and Gotham is now his city again. So at least there is that and we will see what the new year and new writer bring for Batman.

We know from the Epilogue that we will see the return of the Joker. And now he may have an end game planned for Batman. Will he expose Bruce as his secret identity to the world? The way things are going in DC, he just might.
