Family Tree #1

Family Tree #1 is the series premier for Image Comics by Jeff Lemire and Phil Hester. Single mom, Loretta, and her family are thrown into chaos. Her son, Josh is in trouble at school again. But worse than that, her 8 year old daughter, Meg has some sort of rash. Or at least that’s what they think it is. This is the beginning of something big that may have worldwide implications.

This was a pretty good premier issue. The narration is is from some point in the future so we get some bits of information of where this is all going. I believe we find out later that Meg is narrating the events.  The art is great for this type of story. It is a mature readers comic. But from this issue it was for some violence and language. So if that stuff isn’t for you then you probably don’t want to pick this up.

Family Tree #1

Single mom, Loretta, gets a call at work from her son’s school that she needs to come to get him. She picks up her daughter, Meg, first and they notice she has a rash on her arm. When the get to the high school, Loretta finds that Josh had marijuana at school. An old man gives Meg something outside that he says will help. She doesn’t tell anyone about it. But later on at home, Meg’s rash has spread all over her arm and on her back.

This rash is definitely not a normal rash. There is a branch growing out of her back. As they all race to the hospital, a van smashes into them and bald men try to take Meg away. That is until the old man shows up to take some of the bald men out. It turns out that old man is Meg’s grandfather.
