This will be probably as close to a “bad review” as you’ll get from me. But, comic book writers can’t please everyone so here we go. It’s of course written by Tom King as he has since the Rebirth at #1. Art was done by Mikel Janin and Jorge Fornes and Jordie Bellaire on colors. The artwork is good throughout. The spreads that are intermingled into the issues are really good, particularly the one with Bane and all the villains. I like the color scheme changes when we go from the ongoing fight scene to other elements of the story.
The story is getting a little stuck in place in my opinion. King nailed it in issues like #57 where Batman goes against KGBeast and leaves him in the snow after a terrific battle. But it just seems like the story hasn’t advanced much since then. We’ve gotten small chunks of new information each issues, but I thought that coming out of the Nightmare arc we’d getting something huge in this one. Most of the issue was a recap of Bane’s plan to lift Batman up just to bring him down. I can say I kind of rushed through reading thinking we’d get a huge revelation at the end, but I just don’t think that it was new information.
Who knows, I might be back here in a few weeks saying how brilliant this whole story arc was but for now, I’m a little disappointed. I realize though that you can’t fill every issue with ground breaking revelations. I’m just hoping there is going to be a big payoff in the near future.
