This is the conclusion of the Hunted Event for the Amazing Spider-Man. We’ve got Nick Spencer writing and Humberto Ramos penciling and inking. Victor Olazaba is also inking with Edgar Delgado and Erick Arciniega coloring. This event started in issue 16 and has been mostly weekly with four supplemental HU issues added to the story. I’m not a huge fan of big events that go weekly or bi-weekly for the simple reason that it adds to an already full pull list. But, despite that fact, I did enjoy this event.
Probably the best issue, since I didn’t get around to writing about it, was 18.HU. The story of Gibbon trapped by Kraven and eventually dying because he trusted the Vulture over Spider-Man was heart-wrenching to say the least. So getting to the conclusion, we’ve got Spider-Man finally set free from his cage only to find a pile of bodies he believes were killed by Dr Connor (who he removed an inhibitor chip from previously). Distraught that Dr Connors did this, Spidey regrets his choice to remove that chip.
Kraven reveals his ultimate plan for this whole elaborate hunt in Central Park. He want to battle Spider-Man to the death, and if Spidey wins, everyone gets set free. It turns out though Kraven never actually intends on winning. He wants Spider-Man to break his curse and kill him so that he can rest. He almost gets his wish until Spider-Man realizes that the bodies were not killed by Dr Connors at all. With Kraven realizing he’s not going to get what he wants from his original plan, he frees everyone, including Spider-Man, and crafts a new plan. He puts on a Spidey suit and goes out to confront his son. He appears to get his wish to break the curse as only the spider can kill him, since his son kills him while he’s wearing the suit. But there is one thing left unanswered, was the vision Spider-Man saw of MJ real or just an illusion? And it looks like Spider-Man has a new Kraven to hunt him.
Like I said, I don’t like big events like this but this was a really good story arc. Even some of the supplemental HU issues were pretty great. The art in this particular issue was ok, I’m not a big fan of Spider-Man’s look in this issue though. He looks super slender and like a skeleton in the black suit. That’s really my biggest complaint though as most of the rest of the issue looks great. There was also one panel I could not figure out what was going on I’ll post. I can’t wait to see how quickly the new Kraven becomes a part of the story or will we get a break as we find out what’s going on with MJ.
