This is, I guess, considered Volume 4 but we are starting over with Whedons characters just like Buffy through Boom Studios. I’m always down for a new look at some of my favorite stories ever. While I love super hero comics, I think I enjoy the sci-fi/horror stories more. This issue is written by Bryan Edward Hill, illustrated and colored by Gleb Melinkov with additional coloring by Gabriel Cassata. I’ve read a bunch of the comics that continued the show after it ended but I’m excited to see what Boom can do here.
We start with a look at a hunter named Mara fighting against a horde of vampires led by evil Angel. She does her thing, taking out a bunch of vamps before getting hit with an arrow from a mysterious female. Evil Angel then does his thing and turns Mara, all because he wanted a rider with an axe.
The story then shifts to now, with good Angel in Los Angeles, not know what he’s there to fight. There is some Instagram like cyber bullying going on to some local kids. Angel is meeting with an old friend, Francis, whom he saved as a boy. Upon returning home, Angel is met with Lilith as she tell Angel she has put protection on his home from all things born from her. She also delivers the bad news that he is about to lose a friend to what it is he is here to fight. We see then that what ever the entity is, it is affecting people through the Instagram-like app, and Francis’ daughter has set her home on fire with her and her parents inside.
So my first question is what exactly is Liliths role? How big, bad and powerful is she? Is she the mother of all things evil? I really enjoyed this first issue. I liked the art shift between past and present. You can definitely see the difference between Melnikov and Cassata’s pages. I got the Katie Infante cover for this one. I could have gotten the 1 per store cover but I really liked this portrayal of David Boreanaz. I wonder how long this story is going to go without Buffy and how much are their stories going to overlap. Below is a look at Evil Angel is his bat helmet on.
